- New Service will make you money running your BBS...
-
- A new service is being offered by Modtek, Incorporated that will allow
- existing BBS' to operate at a profit. Any BBS, regardless of size, intent,
- sponsor, or purpose, including any BBS regardless of tax status, can make
- use of this service.
-
- If you currently operate a BBS, you would like the BBS to operate at other
- than a loss. It should provide for you, the BBS owner/operator, with the
- same rewards that it provides the users of your BBS - value.
-
- We here at Modtek, Incorporated have been devising a plan to support BBS'
- around the country so that they stay open, become more useable, and operate
- at a modest profit. The amount of money depends on the use your system
- receives.
-
- As a BBS operator you have costs, heavy duty costs. They include your the
- cost of the system and its maintenance, telephone lines, and your time.
- Some BBS have begun defraying the cost of operating the BBS allowing sub-
- scribers only. The BBS' typically charge as follows (taken from actual
- charges):
-
- . low charges: $15 one time per year.
-
- . medium charges: $15 first three months, $10 each additional three
- months. (equivalent to $45 per year).
-
- . higher costs: some BBS charge up to $240 per year and more.
-
-
- The Problem With Charging...
-
- The first problem with charging for a BBS, and getting paid for it, is that
- it is only practical when the purchaser perceives it as a value. And it
- doesn't matter what the cost is so long as the value received makes the
- cost a good deal.
-
- The second problem is one of timeliness. When I sign on to a BBS I want
- what I see on the BBS now. To call back after a I sent in a check makes it
- time consuming and looses value, particularly since it will often take at
- least one week for the transaction to be processed and for the service to
- be available.
-
-
- Modtek's New Service will make you money...
-
- A club is being created by Modtek called On-Line Services. On-Line Services
- membership is open to any user who signs up on a BBS and pays a membership
- fee.
-
- For each individual member:
-
- . On-Line Services will offer high discounts on equipment for IBM/pc's,
- clones, Macintosh's, Apple ][e, etc... Typically, discounts will be
- to about 8% above wholesale price!
-
- . On-Line Services will offer similar discounts on software.
-
- . On-Line Services will offer low cost Health and Life Insurance not
- available to many professionals.
-
- . On-Line Services will offer car rental and Hotel discounts for any city
- in United States, Canada, and Carribean.
-
-
- For each BBS, On-Line Services will offer:
-
- . On-Line Services will process your MasterCard, Visa, or AmericanExpress
- charge within 24 hours (Mon - Sat).
-
- . On-Line Services will setup Automatic Check Withdrawl for those who do
- not use credit cards.
-
- . Publizise your BBS on On-Line Services newsletters distributed worldwide.
-
-
- How It Will Work...
-
- When a new BBS user connects to your BBS you explain the service as we will
- outline it to you (and as it changes from time to time). You agree to offer
- On-Line Services to all members of your BBS. You must also:
-
- . Offer On-Line Services to ALL members of your BBS (without exception);
-
- . Store On-Line Service catalog for uploading and brousing on your BBS;
- It must be in a readily accessible location and you must advertise its
- location. Either Files or Bulletins will be just fine.
-
- . You must provide a method for accessing from the user their real name,
- address, telephone number (day/eve), credit card name, credit card
- number, expiration date, all required for verification.
-
- . Alternative to a credit card, you must get bank name, address, bank
- number, and customer acct number.
-
- . We will bill customers credit card or checking account the exact amount
- you specify, at the time you specify, and give you, by way of a tele-
- communications file, name/addresses and approvals. Within seven to
- fourteen days, depending on payment by the credit card company, we will
- send you a check or direct deposit your credits to your account.
-
- . Your customers may order through you, and you directly to us, any soft-
- ware, hardware, and/or other service, for which you may, at YOUR OPTION,
- receive 5% of the purchase price.
-
-
- Cost Of This Service...
-
- Modtek, Incorporated will charge $5. per quarter ($20./year) per member for
- this service. Because the service will be nationwide, the software discounts,
- hotel discounts, etc... are available that cannot be available to any other
- club or BBS.
-
- If you currently DO NOT CHARGE for your BBS, I recommend strongly that you
- describe the service to your customers and get their reaction to this
- approach. Inform them of what you intend to do with the money you receive.
-
- If you currently charge on a yearly basis, inform all users of the upgrade
- fee ($5/quarter) and solicit the opinions of new customers.
-
- If you...
-
- currently charge $15/year ... then you will have to charge $20 for the
- first three months, then at least $5 per
- quarter after that.
-
- currently charge $20/quarter ... charge $25 per quarter.
-
-
-
- When Does The Service Begin...
-
- On-Line Services will begin October 1, 1986. Contracts will be mailed to all
- BBS' who request information and will be available on this BBS.
-
- A complete list of all suppliers who will join On-Line Service will be
- available on or about that time. (We have to get them contractually commited
- as well).
